How to migrate a local IMW installation to a Type II network installation

Issue

Intersection Magic can be installed in a variety of configurations. On occasion it is desirable to change a Type I (all local) installation to a Type II (application and database on server, config local) This article describes that process.

Explanation

A Type II IMW network installation involves putting the application software on a file server along with the database and a template of configuration files.  Individual clients are then installed from that network file server.  Any updates, configuration changes, etc. are then propogated to the client installations each time the software is launched.

Note: This is not a client/server installation.  The application is stored on a file server, along with the database, but no software runs on the server.  All software runs on the local client desktop.

Solution

For this process, you will need an empty USB thumb drive (i.e. E:)

On the current working computer Ð Copy the database and configuration:

1.       Make a copy of the Intersection Magic database.

a.       Make a folder on the USB thumb drive.  Call it ÒDatabaseÓ (i.e. E:Database).

b.      Run the Intersection Magic program

c.       Select Utilities / Database / Copy.

d.      First select the current database as the database to copy.  Then specify the Database directory on the thumb drive as the ÒtoÓ directory. (use the same original file name)

e.      Close Intersection Magic

2.       Make a copy of your configuration that will be used as a ÒtemplateÓ for future installations

a.       Run CopyCfg.exe from the C:Magic folder.  (it may take a few minutes to complete loading)

b.      Choose current configuration folder (i.e. c:magicCOLO)

c.       Leave checkboxes untouched, it will default to all files.

d.      Instead of floppy, choose ÒOther drivesÓ.  Select the USB key root folder, (i.e. ÒE:Ó)

On any computer Ð Prepare the network installation:

1.       Map a drive letter to the network share for the Intersection Magic installation (i.e. N: to  \PWServerApps)

2.       Add the Intersection Magic installer to the USB thumb drive (i.e. ÒE:Ó)

a.       Download latest Intersection Magic from http://www.pdmagic.com/clients/downloads.cfmto a temporary folder

b.      Rename the installer from it’s .exe name to a .zip name (i.e. Imw_6734.exe to Imw_6734.zip)

c.       Extract all files to the root folder (E:) of the thumb drive

3.       Install Intersection Magic to the network folder

a.       Insert the thumb drive, and run the setup.exe program

b.      Change the install folder to the network drive  (i.e. N:Magic)

c.       Uncheck the ÒInstall Demo/Tutorial ConfigurationÓ checkbox

d.      Proceed with the installation

e.      When complete, the ÒIMW Configuration InstallerÓ will load automatically

4.       Use the IMW Configuration Installer to copy the configuration files to the network

a.       When prompted to ÒSelect IMW LocationÓ, it will reference the network folder.  Select ÒNextÓ.

b.      When prompted to ÒSelect the Configuration to be InstalledÓ, choose the ÒStandard CO configÓ from the list

c.       Set the configuration location to a subdirectory of the network folder called ÒDataÓ. (i.e. N:MagicData)

d.      Allow the installer to complete. Select Finished.

5.       Copy the database to the server

a.       Copy the Database directory from the thumb drive to the network install directory. (i.e. E:database to N:MagicDatabase

On each new workstation where the software is to be run:

1.       Map a drive letter to the network share for the Intersection Magic installation (i.e. N: to  \PWServerApps)

2.       Run cSetup.exe from the network drive. (i.e. N:MagiccSetup.exe)

a.       When prompted to ÒSelect IMW LocationÓ, it will reference the network folder.  Select ÒNextÓ.

b.      When prompted to ÒSelect the Configuration to be InstalledÓ, choose the ÒStandard CO configÓ from the list

c.       When prompted for ÒShortcut name and configuration folderÓ, accept the default values

d.      Complete the installation

3.       Run IMW using the icon on the desktop.

4.       Use Database / Select to locate the database, now on the server (i.e. N:MagicdatabaseDataAcc.dat)

5.       The program is now ready to run

Optional, recommended steps, to be performed from original computer:

1.       Prepare a Crash Magic configuration to send to PdÕ Programming

a.       Download Imw2Xml.exe from  http://www.pdmagic.com/clients/downloads.cfm

b.      Run Imw2Xml

c.       Choose the imw.ini from the current configuration folder (c:magicCOLO)

d.      Select ÒProcessÓ and select the XML folder on the thumb drive as the file location

e.      Send the two files now located in that folder to PdÕ Programming by email

2.       Backup remaining user-created files.  All files in the current configuration folder. (c:magicCOLO)  Put these on a CD or (different) thumb drive for storage.

3.       If your installation includes the use of virtual locations, the MS Access database must also be located and copied for use in the new installation.  It can be copied to the new network database directory
