Changing the appearance/order of IMW edit fields.

Issue

changing the appearance of the IMW Edit can increase the speed and ease of entering data.

Explanation

It may be useful to change the order of the fields in the IMW Editor. Data entry can then follow the crash report being entered. Also page names and field names can be titled to clarify the data that should be entered.

Solution

The solution is to edit the .edt file in your configuration. This file can be opened in an edit window in Intersection Magic or notepad.

As always before making any changes to your configuration you must back up your existing configuration and database!

When you start IMW Edit with a valid configuration a file with the .edt extension is also created listing all of your field names.  This file is what defines the order and titles of the fields shown in the IMW EDIT window.  The file can be edited to change the appearance of the program. The file has three sections Exclude, page and control.

The Exclude section allows you to not show certain basefields during data entry.  If you set any of these to TRUE the field will not be shown.  This is handy if you are not using Uword or Ulong for data entry. Changing any of the FALSE values to TRUE will cause that field to not be displayed. As shown below.

U Long=FALSE
U Word=FALSE

Exclued fields set to TRUE after the change.

U Long=TRUE
U Word=TRUE

The Pages section allows you to name the different pages shown at the bottom of the screen.  Perhaps you could define page 1 as being general crash information, page 2 as being vehicle 1 information, page 3 as being vehicle 2 information, and so on. You are limited to about 8 characters for each page name.

[Page1]
Name=Page1
[Page2]
Name=Page2
[Page3]
Name=Page3
[Page4]
Name=Page4
[Page5]
Name=Page5

Changed IMW Edit pages

The Control sections define the order of the fields, the name or text you wish it to have, and the “valid” field name as defined in the lookup table.  So, Control1 is the first field, Control2 is the second, and so on. Each page can display a total of 15 user fields. Page 1 is for Control1 – Control15, Page 2 is for Control16 – Control30 and so on. The fields are number per column starting with the top left field. This means that Control1 is the top left field and Control2 is just below that.

An example of changing the County field with the Dir From Int field and rename Movement 1 to Veh 1 Move is shown below:

Before the change.

Default Demo user fields [Control1]

Name=COUNTY
Field=COUNTY
[Control2]
Name=DIR FROM INT
Field=DIR FROM INT
[Control3]
Name=MOVEMENT 1
Field=MOVEMENT 1

 After the change.

Defalut demo user fields after altering .edt file. [Control1]

Name=DIR FROM INT
Field=DIR FROM INT
[Control2]
Name=COUNTY
Field=COUNTY
[Control3]
Name=VEH 1 MOVE
Field=MOVEMENT 1

Changes to the .edt file only alter the way your data is displayed in the IMW Edit window. It will not alter your data.

Make sure to back up the file, and store it in a safe place when you have finished.
